Safe, controlled blasting at Midrand office park. As the latest generation electronic initiation system from blasting solutions provider BME, AXXIS Silver has once again proved its accuracy and flexibility in a controlled blast in a – high-density area. According to Hennie Du Preez, Manager for AXXIS Support at BME, Pro-Frag Drilling and Blasting, who is widely known as experts and the preferred supplier in the application of electronic delay detonators, had to initiate a blast in Midrand Gauteng, for their client Labucon, , amid an urban area. Blasting was required for excavations at a new office park precinct, with strict limitations to avoid any impact on adjacent structures. “It was important that the blast be conducted with minimal levels of ground vibration and air blast,” said Du Preez. “It also had to ensure that the risk of fly rock was also well addressed and mitigated.” There was no room for error in the blast parameters, he noted, as there was a roadway just 20 metres away and a building housing a gym only 34 metres away. Pro-frag drilling and blasting construction company provided the specific timing design, with blast holes measuring four metres deep and 89 mm in diameter – spaced, 1.5 1,8 metres apart. “Using AXXIS Silver to initiate the 766 detonators on this blast, we were able to ensure a controlled blast within the limitations required,” he said. Electronic initiation systems allow detonators to be accurately initiated within milliseconds of each other. This staggers the energy release, avoiding the chance of five or six holes detonating at the same time. Reducing the charge mass per delay leads to lower vibrations. BME Gamesburg Optimized

On Wednesday the 14th of November, the Mine Safety Department and Management Team at BME surprised 66 workers at Gamsberg Mine in the Northern Cape, South Africa with a commemorative braai and gift packs. The Safety Day was a celebration of the team’s collective efforts in saving over 1 million LTI (lost time due to injury hours). On 31 October 2022, the BME Gamsberg team boasted a formidable 2 648 LTI free days. This represents an impressive 1 063 592 man-hours of effort – a commendable achievement! The team achieved this significant milestone by being conscious of safety as part of day-to-day tasks. This is supported by BME’s Safety for Life initiative, which educates and promotes safer mining practices. A great time was had by all, and the Gamsberg team are eager to continue adding valuable LTI hours by focusing on areas where safety can be enhanced. Well done to the team at Gamsberg! You set a fantastic example for everyone at BME and we look forward to honouring more achievements with you in future. BME designs its electronic detonators to measure and predict key blast impacts. Electronic detonation systems play an important role in achieving safe blasting. They allow detonators to be accurately initiated within milliseconds of each other, staggering the energy release rather than having five or six holes detonating at the same time. Reducing the charge mass per delay thereby reduces the resulting vibration. There are requirement that any blasting in the vicinity of communities, structures houses, roads or other receptors requires a minimum safety radius. Where BME conducts blasts on behalf of customers, it applies a blasting radius of 1 km away from any persons or communities, and 500 ms from any material that might be negatively affected.

We here at BME are immensely proud of the hard-working miners at Gamsberg Mine in South Africa, who have achieved an incredible feat of over 1 million accident-free hours! This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to the team’s commitment to making safety a priority and embracing BME’s Safety for Life initiative. From the last Lost Time Injury in April 2015, the team has worked diligently for over 2,648 days to achieve this incredible milestone. This feat was celebrated in style with a commemorative braai and gift packs for the 66 workers involved. It was a great opportunity to recognize their dedication and hard work in ensuring that everyone stays safe while on the job. We cannot overstate how proud we are of the team at Gamsberg Mine for setting an example for everyone at BME. Congratulations to everyone involved in this milestone, and we look forward to more impressive achievements in the future. Click here to read more about our mining safety operations:
